About Me
|
Hello, and welcome to my website! I’m Jennifer, and I am both the second flutist in the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and an enthusiastic flute teacher of students of all ages and abilities. I serve on the board of Tenth Life Cat Rescue, which prioritizes helping cats with special needs. You can follow the exploits of my blind cat Stevie on Instagram with the handle @steviepeeperscat! When I am not practicing, teaching, rehearsing, performing (or trying to get you to adopt a cat!), I enjoy traveling, cooking, obsessively reading cookbooks, and trying to grow my own food. As proud residents of the city of St Louis, my husband and I have restored homes in two different neighborhoods and love taking advantage of the huge range of interesting things to do (and eat!) here.
Now that you know the essentials, my obligatory "professional" bio is below..... Flutist Jennifer Nitchman has been described by critics as giving performances that are “deeply felt” with “a tone like spun gold” (St Louis Post-Dispatch). Appointed by Itzhak Perlman, she has held the position of Second Flute with the St Louis Symphony since 2003. Jennifer made her solo debut with the SLSO in 2005 and has made several other solo appearances with the orchestra.
In addition to her orchestral career, Jennifer is an active teacher. She is a member of the faculty of Saint Louis University, maintains a private teaching studio in her home and works extensively with the St Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra as a coach. Previously, she has been on the faculty at the Brevard Music Center and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and is a frequent guest for master classes and recitals at flute festivals and universities. Jennifer also maintains an active solo and chamber music schedule. She frequently performs with the Chamber Society of St Louis, Missouri Chamber Music Festival and as part of the St Louis Symphony Orchestra Community Outreach Program and Live at the Pulitzer. Ms. Nitchman has appeared as a featured performer at the National Flute Association’s Annual Convention, and has been the winner of numerous competitions, including the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the Flute Society of Washington Young Artist Competition. Ms. Nitchman has also performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and at the Quartz Mountain Music Festival, the Britt Festival, and Brevard Music Festival. She previously held the position of Assistant Principal Flute with the United States Army Field Band in Washington , DC . She holds a Master of Music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Bachelor of Music from Ithaca College and has also completed coursework towards a Doctor of Music at Indiana University-Bloomington. |
